KANNUR: The investigation report of jail DIG said that the notorious criminal Govindachamy escaped from Kannur Central Jail without any assistance. There is no proof for the staff or fellow inmates helping him to escape. There is confusion over the cloth found in the cell. Govindachamy's left hand is remarkably strong. The report has recommended a scientific examination on cutting the iron bars.
Govindachamy escaped from the jail after months of planning. It is reported that he took about 28 days to cut the iron bars of the cell. The police had launched an extensive search for Govindachamy, who escaped from jail. On information from locals, Govindachamy was caught from a well near an empty building in Thalap. Govindachamy was shifted to the higher-security Viyyur jail.
CCTV footage of Govindachamy jumping jail had surfaced. The footage shows him cutting the bottom of the iron bar and squeezing out through it. He can also be seen taking some items, including clothes, three times after coming out of the cell.
A team led by Kannur Town Inspector Sreejith Koderi had recorded the statements of the jail authorities and fellow prisoners. The statements of the prisoners in block number 10 where Govindachamy was housed, have been recorded. The internal investigation of the prison department has also been completed. Northern Region DIG V Jayakumar conducted the investigation. Three police officers have been suspended in the incident. An action has been recommended against one.
