THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kerala has achieved a remarkable milestone in reducing infant mortality, surpassing even the United States. In Kerala, only five infants out of every 1,000 die, compared to 5.6 in the U.S. These figures are based on the 2023 report released by the Registrar General and Census Commissioner under the Union Ministry of Home Affairs.

This is the lowest infant mortality rate in India, where the national average stands at 25. Kerala’s newborn mortality rate is below four, comparable to developed countries, while the national average is 18.

Health Minister Veena George said this achievement reflects Kerala’s strong healthcare system. She noted that the state ensures healthcare access for all sections, including tribal and coastal communities. Sixteen hospitals in Kerala have received National Quality Assurance Certification for maternity care, and six hospitals have also been awarded the National Muskan recognition.

Key initiatives behind the success

  1. Kerala became the first state to launch the Mother and Child Friendly Hospital Initiative, providing neonatal intensive care units for newborns.
  2. Comprehensive newborn screening has been introduced in all hospitals to detect congenital disabilities early, with free treatment for rare genetic disorders.
  3. Under the Hridyam project, free treatment is given for congenital heart diseases, with special focus on the first 1,000 days of a child’s life.

"Continuous efforts are being made to improve the standards of all hospitals where deliveries take place. This is proof that healthcare services are being made available to all, including vulnerable sections,” Minister Veena George said.
