Panchayat president held for stealing chain of passenger

CHENNAI: A panchayat president has been arrested for stealing a gold chain of a fellow passenger on a bus. The incident happened at Koyambedu in Chennai. Bharathi (56), president of Nariambattu panchayat in Tirupattur and leader of DMK women's wing, was arrested.

The gold chain weighing four sovereigns belonging to Varalakshmi of Nelkundram went missing while she was returning home by bus after attending a wedding reception in Kanchipuram. Police found that Bharathi had stolen the chain after examining the CCTV footage in Nelkundram.

Varalakshmi, who got down at the Koyambedu bus stand, realized that the chain she was carrying was missing when she checked her bag. She then filed a complaint with the Koyambedu police. When the police examined the CCTV footage, spotted a woman stealing the chain from her bag.
