KANNUR: A mobile phone was recovered from a KAAPA (Kerala Anti-Social Activities (Prevention) Act) prisoner in Kannur Central Prison following a complaint that he had threatened his wife by calling her. The phone was seized from a prisoner named Gopakumar in Block 1. The man had threatened and verbally abused his wife, a native of Amballur, over the phone the previous day. The woman then filed a complaint with the jail superintendent, along with the recorded evidence of the phone call.

It is learnt that Gopakumar called the woman for money and to bring drugs into the prison. The town police registered a case on the complaint of Central Jail Superintendent K Venu. The police also said that 15 cases are pending against Gopakumar, who has been in the central prison for the past five months. He has been shifted to the 10th block. The record and screenshots of the phone call are being circulated on social media. Although phones have been seized from the prison several times, this is the first time that someone has been arrested with concrete evidence.
