HYDERABAD: An injury has thrown the Indian team into a tizzy during preparations for the Twenty20 World Cup. Youngster Tilak Varma has been injured. The player unexpectedly developed physical discomfort while playing for Hyderabad in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. The test confirmed testicular torsion, and doctors had advised him to undergo surgery immediately. With this, it has been confirmed that Tilak will miss the series against the Kiwis also.
BCCI sources have clarified that Tilak's surgery was completed successfully. The player is currently recovering. BCCI sources said that more information will be announced after discussing the details with the medical panel, including how long Tilak will need to rest.
Although discussions are ongoing to replace Tilak Verma, reports suggest that Shubman Gill is unlikely to be considered for the T20I team. The selectors believe that it is not appropriate to include Gill, the current Test and ODI captain, in the team and not guarantee him a spot. Also, the selectors want to eliminate the situation where Gill will have to be omitted if Tilak returns in the latter stages of the series.
As good news for Indian cricket, Shreyas Iyer has shown his full fitness. Iyer, who played for Mumbai in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, showed his form by scoring 82 runs off 53 balls against Himachal Pradesh. Iyer, who batted without any signs of injury, will join the team for the ODI series against New Zealand.
