19-year-old girl dies after consuming medicine for weight loss seen on YouTube

CHENNAI: A 19-year-old girl died after consuming medicine for weight loss she saw on YouTube. The incident happened in Tamil Nadu’s Madurai. The dead identified as Kalaiyarasi, was first year degree student of Narimedu College. She is daughter of daily wager Vel Murugan and Vijayalakshmi from Meenambalpuram, Sellur in Tamil Nadu. She consumed Vengaram, borax for weight loss.

She bought borax from a shop on January 16. She consumed the medicine on January 17 and soon developed severe vomiting and diarrhoea. Her parents then took her to a private hospital in Munichalai. She was admitted to a government hospital in Madurai as her health deteriorated, but her life could not be saved. The information came to light after the girl's father filed a complaint with the police in the incident. The police said that a case has been registered and an investigation has been launched into the girl's death.
