KOTTAYAM: Five persons were injured after a car overturned and fell into a canal near Karukachal. The injured have been shifted to the Kottayam Medical College Hospital. The condition of one person is serious. The vehicle involved in the accident was a Fortuner car with Ernakulam registration. The accident occurred at Asramapadi in Champakara while the vehicle was travelling from Karukachal to Kottayam.
The vehicle plunged into a canal with a drop of about 15 feet. As the water level in the canal was low, the car did not get submerged. Exact details about the occupants of the vehicle are yet to be confirmed. Rescue workers said that those involved in the accident were not Malayalis. Since the car doors were locked, locals had to break the glass using stones to rescue the passengers.
Locals said that similar accidents are frequent in the area, with six vehicles meeting with accidents there over the past two years. Residents pointed out that the absence of a protective wall along the canal is the main reason behind these repeated accidents.
