THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The court has returned the passport of Kannur native and Youth Congress leader Farzin Majeed, who is accused of trying to assassinate Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on a plane. The passport must be returned to the court before June 1. District Principal Sessions Judge A. Nasira has granted permission to the accused to travel abroad for personal purposes.
The prosecution has been accused of serious negligence in the issue of the passport being returned to the accused. The passport was submitted to the court as part of the bail conditions. Farzin Majeed filed the petition through his lawyer Mridul John Mathew, seeking renewal of his expiring passport and permission to travel abroad for personal purposes.
After considering the petition, the court asked the prosecution why the chargesheet was not filed in the case even after three years. It was also directed to file a detailed report in this regard the next day. However, the prosecution's reply was that the chargesheet was delayed due to a lack of central approval.
Apart from Farzin, Youth Congress activist R.K. Naveen Kumar is also an accused in the case. The incident took place on an Indigo flight from Kannur to Thiruvananthapuram on June 13, 2022. The case is that the accused rushed near the Chief Minister inside the plane and tried to kill him, and shouted slogans. The Valiyathura Assistant Commissioner registered the case on the complaint of EP Jayarajan, who was with the Chief Minister.
In addition to attempted murder, the accused were also charged with charges under the Civil Aviation Act. The trial of such charges requires special permission from the central government.
