The murder of Dr. Vandana Das is a wound on the collective conscience of Kerala that refuses to heal. The only daughter of K.G. Mohandas and Vasanthakumari, Vandana entered the medical profession fueled by hope and defined by a gentle, tireless dedication to service. That bright future was brutally extinguished by the hands of Sandeep, a resident of Kudavattoor, in an unprecedented act of violence that marked the state’s first-ever murder of a doctor on duty. While the Sessions Court has sentenced the accused to life imprisonment and a fine of one lakh rupees, the verdict has brought little peace. For a mother demanding the ultimate penalty and a public shaken to its core, the quest for justice continues as the prosecution prepares its appeal.

The tragedy began in the early hours of May 10, 2023, with a simple plea for help. Sandeep had contacted the Kollam Rural Police Control Room claiming he was injured in an accident. When officers arrived, they found him armed with a stick but seemingly in need of care. Escorted by police, his relative Rajendran Pillai, and a public servant named Binu, Sandeep was taken to the Kottarakkara Taluk Hospital for a leg injury. There, the atmosphere turned lethal. In a sudden, violent shift, Sandeep turned on those who had come to his aid, striking out at Binu, his own relative, and several officers and hospital staff. The rampage reached its most devastating conclusion when it found Dr. Vandana. Having sacrificed her sleep to remain on duty, she was met with a brutal end while in the very heart of her selfless service.

In a moment of unthinkable savagey, Sandeep seized a pair of scissors from the observation room and turned them into a weapon. He launched a relentless assault on Dr. Vandana Das, targeting her neck, face, and head. Even as she collapsed to the ground, the violence did not cease; Sandeep pinned her down, delivering a final, fatal blow to the back of her neck. Though she was rushed from a private hospital in Kottarakkara to a specialized facility in Thiruvananthapuram, the injuries were too severe to overcome. It is a haunting irony that Vandana, an MBBS student from Azeezia Medical College, was at the Kottarakkara Taluk Hospital to learn the art of saving lives, only to have her own taken in such a hollow, brutal fashion.

In a calculated attempt to evade justice, Sandeep sought refuge behind a facade of mental illness, claiming a diagnosis of schizophrenia. However, the veil was quickly lifted; two separate medical evaluations conducted after his arrest confirmed that his behavior was a performance, not a pathology. The legal battle that followed was rigorous. Led by Kollam Rural Crime Branch DySP M.M. Jose, the prosecution built an airtight case, presenting 207 documents, 23 physical exhibits, and the testimony of 70 witnesses. Despite the defense's efforts and the accused's various "tricks" to escape accountability, the truth remained unshakable before the scales of justice.

We often speak of those in the medical profession as being "God-like" in their service to humanity. When that service is met with such depraved violence, it burns the very embers of our collective faith. Dr. Vandana’s sacrifice must not be in vain. It is a stark reminder that we must remain ever-vigilant, ensuring that our hospitals remain sanctuaries of healing rather than scenes of such profound tragedy.
