KOLLAM: A political storm engulfed the Kollam constituency after a car owned by the son of UDF candidate Advocate Bindu Krishna met with an accident, seriously injuring two girls. The LDF alleged that the KSU workers in the car tried to escape without trying to save the injured.

The accident took place on the Asramam Link Road near the Kollam KSRTC depot at around 6:30 pm on Tuesday. The car, which was speeding after coming from the Kottikalasham at Chinnakada, lost control and hit two girls who were walking on the side of the road.

The victims are Chinnulakshmi (14), a native of Vallikkeezhu, and Dhanalakshmi (14), a native of Ramankulangara, both class 8 students at Vallikkeezhu Govt. HSS.

Chinnu fell into the lake, and Dhanalakshmi got stuck in the guardrail on the footpath. The condition of both of them, who are undergoing treatment at a private hospital, is critical.

The students were walking towards the KSRTC bus stand, through the footpath, after attending a summer camp at the hockey stadium. LDF and UDF leaders came to the hospital where they are undergoing treatment. The Kollam East police arrested and released Devanandan, a law student from Neyyattinkara, who was driving the car. There were four people in the car, including Devanandan. UDF activists are defending the LDF's allegations by arguing that Devanandan is the son of a CPM leader from Neyyattinkara.
