IMPHAL: The National Centre for Seismology (NCS) has reported that an earthquake measuring 5.2 on the Richter scale has struck Manipur. The earthquake struck at 5.59 am on Tuesday. The epicentre was in Kamjong, officials said. The quake struck 62 km below the surface. No major damage or casualties were reported.
The NCS said the tremor in Manipur was after an earthquake shook Myanmar earlier in the day. A 4.6-magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar at 05:38 am. Kamjong in Manipur is located near the India-Myanmar border. A 5.4-magnitude earthquake was felt in Colombia and Ecuador at 7:52 am.
The earthquake in Manipur today also follows a 7.5-magnitude earthquake in northeastern Japan yesterday. Following this, the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) had issued a tsunami warning. The JMA said that an 80-centimeter tsunami was recorded at Kuji Port in Iwate Prefecture.
The epicenter of the earthquake was at a depth of 10 kilometers in the Pacific Ocean, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency. The earthquake was reportedly so strong that even large buildings in Tokyo, hundreds of kilometers away from the epicenter, shook.
Two earthquakes struck Afghanistan one after the other last Saturday. The first earthquake with a magnitude of 5.6 struck at 8.24 am on Saturday morning Indian time. This was followed by a second earthquake with a magnitude of 4.8 at 8.46 am. Both earthquakes occurred within a radius of 170 km. The tremors were also felt in northern Indian regions including Jammu and Kashmir. However, no damage or casualties were reported there.
