Drinks spirit brought for making sanitizer, remand prisoner dies in Malampuzha District Jail

PALAKKAD: A remand prisoner died after consuming sanitizer. He has been identified as Ramankutty (36), a native of Mundoor. The accused arrested for theft was remanded on February 18. He was admitted in the hospital on March 24 after consuming the sanitizer. He died Thursday morning.

Sources said the accused lodged at Palakkad Malampuzha district jail consumed the sanitizer while engaged in manufacturing it. Spirit was brought to the jail to make sanitizer. He drank the spirit evading the eyes of jail authorities on duty. Soon he developed uneasiness and was immediately taken to the government hospital in Malampuzha and then to Thrissur Medical College Hospital. He died while undergoing treatment in the ICU.

He was confirmed of consuming the poisonous spirit in an examination conducted in the hospital. The Malampuzha police have registered a case on the incident. Jail IG has started a probe as per the directive of jail DGP.


Ramankutty was the son of Ayyappan.
