IDUKKI: Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has written to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin expressing concern over the unannounced opening of the shutters of the Mullaperiyar Dam. In the letter, the CM asked Stalin to direct officials to hold a meeting to open the shutters of the dam after giving adequate warning. In the letter, the Chief Minister said that the shutters were opened last night and early morning without any warning and that the people living along the Periyar river were distressed by the move from TN. The CM said in the letter that the shutters of the dam should be opened only during the day and that the neighboring states should work together to tackle the disasters caused by climate change.

For the past two days, the water in the dam was released by Tamil Nadu without any clear warning, causing inconvenience to the people living along the Periyar river. More than 8000 cubic feet per second of water was released into the Periyar last night. The move by Tamil Nadu has led to flooding of houses along the Periyar coast at night. The shutters on the dam were opened at 2:30 in the morning. Revenue officials were informed that the shutters had been opened after waking people who were sleeping in the houses. The shutters closed at half past five in the morning but three shutters were raised again at ten. Concerned Periyar coastal residents took to the streets in protest. Locals blocked the national highway and the Vandiperiyar police station.
