Worms in fish; 800 kg of month-old stale fish seized from capital

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: 800 kilograms of state fish was seized from Karakonam. The stale fish was seized during an inspection conducted by the food safety department following a complaint by the locals after finding worms in the fish.

A month-old stale fish was seized during the inspection, jointly conducted by the officials of panchayat and health department. Chemicals were mixed in the fish, said the health inspector.

Around 7,000 kilogram of stale fish has been seized in a state-wide inspection, within the last two weeks. In addition, 150 shops that sold rotten fish were also closed by the food safety department. A total of 1,800 kilogram of stale fish was found from Palakkad, a few days ago.

Meantime, five hotels and two hostels were closed in Thiruvananthapuram city during an inspection by the corporation health squad and the food safety department to ensure food security. Four hotels and two hostels were shut down in an inspection conducted by the health department.

During inspections by the corporation, unhygienic kitchens were found at hotels namely Vizhinjam Alauddin restaurant, Nandancode Irani restaurant, Pottakuzhy Moon City and Nandancode Geethanjali Tiffin Center. Stale fish were also seized from these restaurants.
