norovirus

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: If we make sure that the drinking water is clean, we can get rid of the norovirus which causes gastrointestinal diseases. Fresh water should be ensured everywhere, including in anganwadis and schools, as the virus has been reported in the state.

Infection with the virus can cause inflammation of the lining of the stomach and intestines. It is spread through direct contact with infected people and through the excrement and vomit of an infected person. Healthy people are not significantly affected by the virus. It can be serious in young children, the elderly, and those with other comorbidities.

Symptoms

Exacerbation of vomiting and diarrhea can lead to dehydration which could turn out to be serious

Symptoms begin to appear within 12 to 48 hours

If infected

Rest at home as prescribed by the doctor. Drink ORS solution and boiled water well. Step out only after two days after recovery as infected people can be contagious

Be careful about these

Wells and tanks should be chlorinated with bleaching powder
