THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Health Minister Veena George has directed the Director of Health Department to conduct an investigation and submit a report on the incident in which an 18-year-old girl died of rabies in Palakkad. A detailed investigation into the incident will be conducted by forming a rapid response team under the leadership of Palakkad District Surveillance Officer.

Palakkad native Sreelekshmi (18), who was undergoing treatment for rabies, died on Thursday. She was bitten by the neighbour's dog on May 30 while she was on her way to college. Sreelekshmi had taken all the vaccines prescribed by the health department.

Sreelekshmi showed signs of rabies after undergoing tests at a private hospital two days ago. She was later shifted to Thrissur Medical College. She died early this morning. Sreelekshmi was a first-year BCA student at a private college in Coimbatore.
