NEW DELHI: Controversy is brewing over the Ashoka pillar unveiled by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday, which is to be cast atop the new Parliament building. The opposition has already come out alleging that the national symbol has been turned ridiculous. The design of the new bronze Ashoka pillar has sparked the controversy.
The main criticism is that the lions in the original Ashoka emblem have a sobre look, but the lions one unveiled by PM looks aggressive. The new emblem shows angry lions with bared fangs. Opposition party RJD has alleged that the new Ashoka symbol shows a man-eater's tendency to consume everything in the country.
Leaders from many political parties, including the Congress, criticized the new symbol, but the harsh criticism came from Supreme Court lawyer Prashant Bhushan. Bhushan tweeted that lions in the real symbol reminds Gandhi and Modi's lions reminds Godse.
From Gandhi to Godse; From our national emblem with lions sitting majestically & peacefully; to the new national emblem unveiled for the top of the new Parliament building under construction at Central Vista; Angry lions with bared fangs.
