COLOMBO: Acting President Ranil Wickremesinghe has directed the Speaker to elect a new Prime Minister in Sri Lanka as the protests continue. He instructed to nominate someone who is acceptable to all.
At the same time, the protests intensified in Sri Lanka as President Gotabaya Rajapaksa left the country without announcing his resignation. People occupied the Prime Minister's residence and continues to stay there. Wickremesinghe has directed the army and police to suppress the protests. He also declared state of emergency in the country. But opposition leader Sajith Premadasa came out against the declaration of emergency. Premadasa said Wickremesinghe does not have the right to be acting president.
