THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Higher education institutions in Kerala have fallen behind in the NIRF (National Institutional Ranking Framework) ranking, which assesses higher education and research institutions based on excellence. Kerala University, which was ranked 27 last year, has dropped to rank 40 this year. Kerala has slipped down in the national ranking after achieving A++ grade from the National Accreditation Council (NAAC) for the first time . University of Calicut went from rank 60 to 69. Meanwhile, CUSAT moved up from 44th to . MG University moved up one rank to the 30th position.
Pro-Vice-Chancellor Dr. P P. Ajayakumar said that giving higher score to science research has made Kerala University backward. The university scored only 1.54 in the 'Peer Perception' category of how the public evaluates the university. Last year it was 21.44.
In medical, engineering and businees studies and research, only central institutions excelled. College of Engineering, Thiruvananthapuram has secured 14th rank in architecture exam but 110th rank in engineering. Last time it was ranked 95th. The ranking of many other institutions also went down. The situation is the same for IITs, management institutions, arts and science colleges.
