Major clash breaks out in student protests at Kallakurichi, 50 vehicles set on fire, police opens fire

KALLAKURICHI: A protest by the students over the suicide of a female student at Kallakurichi district of Tamil Nadu turned violent. A violent clash broke out between the protesting students and the police. The students went on a rampage setting fire to vehicles and indulged in stone pelting. The police opened fire in the air to control the protests. However, they did not retreat from the protest and clashed with the police.

Trouble started after a plus two student of a private higher secondary school at Chinnasalem near Kallakurichi committed suicide. A suicide note written by the girl stated that she is taking the drastic step as she could not bear the torture of two teachers. The girl jumped from the building of the school hostel and ended her life on Wednesday morning.


The teachers accused in the note refuted the allegations. With this, the girl's parents and relatives blocked the Kallakurichi-Salem highway on Wednesday. After this, the protests were staged demanding justice for the girl. Many buses were set on fire today.
