NEW DELHI: Justice Uday Umesh Lalit (UU Lalit), 64, took oath as the 49th Chief Justice of India. President Draupadi Murmu administered the oath at the ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan at 10:30 am. He took the oath in the name of God.
Justice U U Lalit took over following the retirement of former CJI N V Ramana. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankar, previous Chief Justice N V Ramana, former President Ram Nath Kovind and other dignitaries attended the ceremony.

U U Lalit will retire on November 8 after his 74-day tenure. Justice Lalit is the second person to become CJI who was directly elevated to the Supreme Court bench from the Bar. Former Chief Justice S M Sikri was the first.
Born on November 9, 1957 in Maharashtra, Justice Lalit was enrolled as an advocate in the Bombay High Court in 1983. Started practicing in the Supreme Court in 1986 and was appointed as Senior Advocate in April 2004. He was Special Public Prosecutor for CBI in 2G cases. He became a Supreme Court judge on August 13, 2014.
