THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Central Meteorological Department informed that there is a possibility of widespread rain in Kerala for the next five days. There is a chance of thunder and lightning along with heavy rain at isolated places in these days.
The areas of Vaipur, Muthupala and Vennikulam are under water in the heavy rains in Pathanamthitta. There are extensive damages in the hilly areas. Many houses and shops have been flooded. All things in the food godowns have been destroyed. The agricultural fields are also under water.
Rain intensified in the district las t night. The police quarters and the railway station are under water. Many people are unable to leave homes.
District Collector Divya S Iyer said the water has started receding from the flooded areas in Pathanamthitta. The collector informed that further arrangements will be made for relief work and there is no cause for concern in the rivers of the district at present.
Meantime, no alert was issued in Pathanamthitta despite heavy rain yesterday and today. This was challenging to take precautions. Due to heavy rains in Kottayam district, Central Meteorological Department has announced yellow alert till September 1.
Five people died when their house collapsed near Thodupuzha in Idukki. The accident happened at Kudayathur Sangamam Junction around 2.30 am. Soman, his wife Jaya, mother Thankamma (75), daughter Shima and grandson Devanand four) died in Chittatichal. Soman's house is completely under mud.
Precautions
The State Disaster Management Authority directed that precautions should be taken from the time the clouds are seen and should not ignore taking such precautions because lightning is not visible. Avoid standing in open areas if you see signs of lightning. Windows and doors should be closed. Disconnect the electrical connection of household appliances. Proximity with electrical equipment should be avoided.
It is dangerous to sit on the terrace, high places or tree branches during thunderstorms. Kite flying should be avoided. If the weather is cloudy, don't let children play in open spaces and terraces.
There will be no electric current in the body of a person struck by lightning. A person struck by lightning should be given medical help immediately. Do not go down to fish or bathe in the water body. Passengers should remain inside their vehicles during thunderstorms as they are safer inside. The State Disaster Management Authority has also advised to avoid travelling in vehicles such as bicycles, bikes and tractors.
