KOTTAYAM: For the first time in the history of a government medical college, a highly complex mandibular joint replacement surgery was successfully completed at the Government Medical Dental College, Kottayam. A 56-year-old from Kottayam underwent the rare surgery. Due to a tumour in the mandible, the mandible and its joint were surgically removed and replaced with a new artificial joint.

The surgery, which took place last Wednesday, lasted seven hours. The surgery was led by Dr S Mohan, Dr Shanti and Dr Sheela Varghese.
