THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kerala has intensified preventive measures as new genetic variants of Covid-19 (XBB, XBB1) were reported in different parts of the world. The new variant is more contagious than earlier ones. Therefore, prevention is necessary, informed Minister Veena George. The Health department estimates that 1.8 percent of those getting infected may require hospitalization. As of now, there is no cause for concern. But mask use has been made mandatory. This was decided in the high-level meeting of the health department chaired by minister Veena George.

Mask must be worn at the airport and in enclosed spaces. The elderly, healthcare workers and people with chronic diseases must take a precautionary dose. At the same time, the meeting assessed that Covid cases are decreasing in the state. Guidelines will be issued to ensure special monitoring and treatment for influenza, as many cases are being reported with symptoms similar to Covid.

Health Department Additional Chief Secretary Dr. Asha Thomas, Principal Secretary Tinku Biswal, NHM State Mission Director Dr. Karthikeyan, Director of Medical Education Dr. Thomas Mathew, Director-in-Charge of Health department Dr Meenakshi also participated in the meeting among others.
