THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Clash in IFFK related to the screening of Lijo Jose Pellissery’s Mammootty starrer film ‘Nanpakal Nerathu Mayyakkam’. The verbal spat between the delegates and volunteers in front of Tagore Theatre resulted in a clash and finally the police had to intervene. The delegates alleged that those who reserved seats were denied entry to the screening.

As the academy had reserved seats for guests, the delegates who had reservation were unable to watch the film. Following this, there were protests in front of the theatre. Three people, including the student who led the protest, were released after being taken into custody by the police.

The first screening of the film in the competition category was scheduled for 3.30 pm on Monday at Tagore Theatre. But those who did not reserve seats for the film started queuing at nine in the morning. Meanwhile, two film screenings were held at Tagore theatre, but there was not much participation. A queue of reserved delegates was also formed at around 1 pm. Entry to the theatre started at three o'clock. But as the seats reserved by the delegates were taken by the guests of the academy and other officials who were part of IFFK, many people who were in queue for hours were left out. This led to the protest.

The police stopped those who tried to forcefully enter into the theatre. As things started to escalate, more police arrived. With this, the delegates gathered in front of the theatre raised the slogans 'Inquilab Zindabad, Police Go Back'. As the protest intensified, two representatives from the delegates were invited for discussion with the organizers. The delegates demanded that one more show be allowed at Tagore itself for those who could not enter the theatre, but the Academy was not ready to accept it. The Academy has taken the stance that it cannot accept this demand as the film still has two more shows. Then the museum police detained three people, including the girl who led the protest in front of the theatre. After the delegates were taken to the police station, hundreds of delegates marched to the IFFK office in Tagore theatre shouting slogans. The strike ended as Academy Chairman Ranjith ensured that the three would be released.
