Biometric punching failed to take off on first day itself

MALAPPURAM: The government’s decision to implement Aadhar based biometric punching system from the first working day of the new year did not work out because of the slack by departments. It was decided that the punching system will be implemented at Collectorates, Directorates, departmental heads’ offices before January 1.

Barring Palakkad and Kasaragod Collectorates, biometric punching system has not been completed anywhere else. The duty to set up punching connectivity is with Keltron. After the Chief Secretary’s final order different departments began to give orders to Keltron only in the last week of December.

Once the bulk orders came all at once there was a shortage of the punching machines. Keltron gets hundred machines each week from a private company. Keltron gives order for the machines only after receiving the advance along with the work order. In the current situation it will take 30 to 40 days to set up the machines once the work order is given.

Keltron authorities are saying that the bulk orders all at once led to challenges in getting machines and to deploy its employees. To reduce the rush, it was aimed that fifty to seventy employees will use one machine. The move is to install the machines everywhere at least in name. After that it will be expanded with time.
