LAHORE: English cricketer Jos Buttler has stepped down as England's ODI and T20 captain following the team’s early exit from the Champions Trophy. Buttler announced that the match against South Africa in the tournament would be his last as England’s white-ball captain. The England-South Africa match is scheduled for Saturday.

England was knocked out of the tournament after suffering defeats against Australia and Afghanistan. Prior to the Champions Trophy, England had also faced heavy defeat in both the ODI and T20I series against India. They lost the T20I series 4-1 and suffered a 3-0 whitewash in the ODI series.

"I am stepping down as England's captain. It is the right decision for both me and the team," said 34-year-old Buttler.

Buttler had led England to victory in the 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia. However, in the 2023 ODI World Cup in India, England, despite being the defending champions, couldn't make it to the semi-finals. Likewise, in the 2024 T20 World Cup in the West Indies, England's campaign ended in the semi-finals after a defeat to India.

Buttler took over as England’s white-ball captain in 2022 after the retirement of Eoin Morgan from international cricket.
