NEW YORK: Former India opener Virender Sehwag has come down heavily on Bangladeshi all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan following his poor batting performance against South Africa in the group stage match of the T20 World Cup. Shakib, the senior player of the Bangladesh team, was dismissed cheaply during the run chase as Bangladesh failed to reach the modest target of 114 runs in 20 overs.
Shakib was dismissed for just 3 runs when he attempted a pull shot off pacer Anrich Nortje's short ball. Lashing out at Shakib Al Hasan over his poor shot selection, Sehwag said that the star Bangladeshi all-rounder should have retired from the T20 format long ago.
"During the last World Cup, I thought he should no longer be picked for the T20 format. Shakib should have retired from T20s long ago. If you are picked in the World Cup squad for your experience, then show that it was actually worth it. You should try to spend at least some time at the crease. You should remember that you're not Adam Gilchrist or Matthew Hayden to play the pull shot," Sehwag said.
Sehwag made the criticism while speaking during the World Cup analysis on CricBuzz. Following the defeat against South Africa, Bangladesh are second in Group D with just two points from two matches. South Africa is at the top of the group with three wins from three games and six points.
