DHAKA: An interim government led by Nobel laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus (84) will take power in Bangladesh today. Army Chief General Waker Uz Zaman said the swearing-in ceremony will take place at 8 pm on Thursday.

It is reported that Yunus will be the 'Chief Advisor' to the interim government. There will be 15 members in the advisory council. Yunus, who is in Paris in connection with the Olympics, will arrive in Dhaka on Thursday afternoon. The decision to make Yunus the head of the interim government was taken at a meeting of President Mohammed Shahabuddin, military chiefs and student leaders on Tuesday night.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's resignation and subsequent escape to India cleared the path for the formation of the interim administration. Although the situation has started coming back to normal, various parts of Bangladesh witnessed violence on Wednesday as well. Jahangirnagar University, which remained closed for the last 20 days, was partially opened yesterday.

Thousands of people took part in a rally led by the opposition Bangladesh National Party (BNP) yesterday. Four deputy governors of the central bank were fired in the name of corruption. The action was taken following the protest of about 400 officials.

Employees evacuated
Meanwhile, India has evacuated all non-essential staff and their families from its embassy and consulates in Bangladesh. Diplomats, including the High Commissioner, will remain in Bangladesh to ensure the safety of Indian citizens.
