COLOMBO: A 21-year-old woman has been arrested for trying to smuggle a new type of deadly synthetic drug made from human bones. The arrested is Charlotte May Lee, a former British flight attendant. Reports say that she was arrested from Bandaranaike Airport in the Sri Lankan capital of Colombo earlier this month.
The synthetic drug known as ‘Kush’ is made from human bones originating in Sierra Leone, West Africa. She brought about 45 kg of the drug stashed in her suitcases. Its market value is about Rs 28 crore. The woman is presently being held in a jail in Colombo. If found guilty, she could face up to 25 years in prison. She is allowed to contact her family.
The Sri Lankan Customs Narcotics Control Unit said that this is the largest drug bust from the Colombo airport. Meantime, Charlotte claimed that the drug was planted in her suitcases without her knowledge. Her lawyer Sampath Perera argued that she was framed. Charlotte was working in Thailand. She was forced to leave the country as her 30-day visa was about to expire. The lawyer said that she had come to Sri Lanka to renew her Thai visa. The woman said that she had never seen such a drug before and that she knows who planted it in her suitcase.
National media reported that the drug Kush is made from a variety of toxic substances. One of its main ingredients is human bone grounded. The specialty of this drug is that it keeps you intoxicated for hours. Media reported that incidents of breaking into graves and stealing skeletons to make Kush are becoming widespread. Last year, the president of Sierra Leone declared a state of emergency in the country over the abuse of Kush.
