
KOCHI: Railways has paid Rs 48.53 crore as compensation to train accident victims over a period of ten years. Figures from the railway headquarters show that Rs 38.55 crore was paid for deaths and Rs 9.98 crore for injuries.
The highest compensation was paid in 2023-24, with Rs 20.86 crore for deaths and Rs 5.44 crore for injured. The least amount of compensation for accidental deaths was paid in 2020-21 - Rs 53 lakh. 2014-15 saw the least amount of compensation paid to the injured - 11 lakhs. The compensation is transferred when the cases related to accidents are decided by the Railway Claims Tribunal.
Coverage up to Rs.10 Lakhs
Railways provide insurance cover up to Rs 10 lakh for train passengers. The insurance premium is 45 paise per trip for passengers with confirmed tickets and who reserved tickets online through the official website (IRCTC). This is also included in the ticket charge. Railway employees do not have such insurance coverage. The information is contained in the reply given by Rabindra Kumar, Deputy Director, Traffic Department, Railway Board, to the RTI application filed by Raju Vazhakkala, a resident of Ernakulam Kakkanad.
