What would you do if you stumbled upon a hidden treasure while walking? You'd be shocked- no doubt about it. That's exactly what happened to two tourists who were walking through a mountain range located in the northern part of the Czech Republic.
The names of the tourists have not been disclosed. They were enjoying a walk, taking in the lush greenery and the natural beauty of the forest. During their walk, they noticed something shining under the rocks. Upon checking, they found an aluminium box. Their curiosity grew, and when they opened the box, they were greeted with an astonishing sight-something right out of a movie: a massive treasure hoard.
Inside were 598 gold coins, ten bracelets, and other valuable jewellery. The gold coins alone weighed eight pounds (approximately 3.7 kilograms). The market value of the coins alone is estimated to be around 30 million rupees.
The tourists made no attempt to claim the treasure for themselves, Instead, they handed it over to the East Bohemia Museum in Kralove. According to Miroslav Novak, head of the archaeological department, an investigation is underway to determine how the treasure ended up there.
The gold jewellery is believed to be over a hundred years old. Novak suspects it was likely hidden around 1945, just before the end of World War II. Interestingly, none of the coins were from the Czech Republic- about half originated from the Balkan region, and the rest were from France.
