MUMBAI: In a shocking incident, a farmer from Maharashtra’s Chandrapur district travelled to Cambodia and sold his kidney to repay crushing debts that had risen to Rs 74 lakh. The farmer, Roshan Sadashiv Kude, said he had borrowed Rs 1 lakh from private moneylenders to start a dairy business after repeated crop losses left him financially strained. However, the venture failed when the cattle he purchased died, and his agricultural output continued to decline.

Kude alleged that the moneylenders charged him an exorbitant interest of Rs 10,000 per day, rapidly inflating the debt. As repayment became impossible, he and his family were allegedly subjected to constant harassment. Despite selling his land and tractor, he was unable to clear the outstanding amount.

According to Kude, one of the lenders suggested he sell his kidney to settle the debt. Through an agent, he was taken to Kolkata for medical examinations and later flown to Cambodia, where his kidney was removed and sold for Rs 8 lakh.

The farmer claimed he approached the police but received no response, further aggravating his physical and mental trauma. He has warned that he will set himself on fire outside the Mantralaya in Mumbai if authorities fail to act on his complaint.
