Security tightened in Jammu and Kashmir jails amid terror attack threats

SRINAGAR: Security has been beefed up in jails in Jammu and Kashmir following terrorist attack threats. According to intelligence reports, terrorists are targeting the Srinagar Central Jail and the Kot Bhalwal Jail in Jammu. These prisons house several high-profile terrorists and individuals who have assisted in terror activities.

The NIA had questioned Nisar and Mushtaq, who were suspected to be aides of the terrorists, in connection with the Pahalgam terror attack. The possibility of attacks on the jails was revealed during these interrogations. Following this intelligence input, the Director General of CISF held meetings with senior officials in Srinagar to assess the situation. In 2023, the CISF had taken up the responsibility for the security of jails in Jammu and Kashmir from the CRPF.

The NIA has indicated that the terrorists involved in the Pahalgam attack are still hiding in South Kashmir, and there could be more terrorists present in the region.

Meanwhile, reports suggest that the nation is ready to respond strongly to ensure justice for the victims of the Pahalgam terrorist attack. Yesterday, a special meeting was held between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan, along with three service chiefs. Air Chief Marshal Amar Preet Singh visited the Prime Minister's official residence yesterday and briefed him on the preparedness. On Saturday, Navy Chief Admiral D.K. Tripathi also met the Prime Minister, followed by Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi on April 30., assuring that the armed forces are fully prepared.
