CHANDIGARH: Three officials of the Punjab police were arrested for forcing an advocate taken into custody to have sex with a co-accused. An official of SP rank and two other policemen were arrested. A special investigation team headed by Ludhiana Police Commissioner Mandeep Singh Sidhu has been formed to investigate the incident.
The complaint was filed by the Punjab Bar Association on the brutal harassment faced by the lawyer. An inquiry was ordered after a meeting with Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann. The lawyer was harassed by a six-member gang including an officer of SP rank. A case has been registered against the police officers for allegedly torturing a lawyer in their custody including forcing him into sex with co-accused.
A case has been registered against Muktsar SP Ramandeep Singh Bhullar, Inspector Raman Kumar Kamboj, constables Harbans Singh, Bhupinder Singh, Gurpreet Singh and home guard Dara Singh. SP Bhullar, inspector Raman Kumar Kamboj and constable Harbans Singh have been arrested.
A special investigation team will submit a report after investigating the incident in detail. The allegation was levelled on Tuesday. The Punjab and Haryana High Court Bar Association later boycotted the court demanding justice for the colleague. The demand was that the police officers who harassed the lawyer should be fired and a case should be filed and arrested.
Meantime, the lawyer was arrested on September 14 based on the complaint of Raman Kumar Kamboj, who is in charge of the crime investigation agency. The complaint alleged that the group of lawyers attacked the policemen and tore the uniforms of some officers.
Another person was also arrested along with the lawyer. The lawyer was forced to have sex with him. Based on the lawyer's statement, Muktsar Chief Judicial Magistrate ordered a register a case against the police on September 22.
