Why Jagan Mohan Reddy made Visakhapatnam the capital of Andhra; seven features behind the announcement

VISAKHAPATNAM: Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy announced that Visakhapatnam will be the capital of Andhra Pradesh. Hyderabad, which was the capital of Andhra earlier, became a part of Telangana when the state of Telangana was formed.

'We invite you to Visakhapatnam, which is going to be our capital in the days to come. I will be moving immediately to Visakhapatnam', Jagan Mohan Reddy said. The announcement was made by the CM in the invitation to the Investors Summit to be held in Visakhapatnam on March 3 and 4.

In 2015, the Andhra government led by TDP leader Chandrababu Naidu declared Amaravati on the banks of the Krishna river as the new capital. But in 2022 there was a move to make three places namely Amaravati, Visakhapatnam, and Kurnool as capitals. As protests against this were raised, this move was dropped in the end.

Why Visakhapatnam?

The coastal city of Visakhapatnam is the largest and most populous city in Andhra Pradesh.

These are the main features of Visakhapatnam.

1. A city with two ports

Visakhapatnam is home to two of the largest ports in India. Visakhapatnam Port and Gangavaram Port.

2. First naval shooting range

The headquarters of the Eastern Naval Command is located here.

3. Jewel of the East Coast

Nestled between the eastern mountains and the Bay of Bengal, Visakhapatnam is known as the 'Jewel of the East Coast'. It is a tourist destination as it has many beaches, museums and temples. The largest and most populous city in Andhra Pradesh, it is also the second largest city on the east coast of India after Chennai.

4. South Asia's first submarine museum

INS Kursura was one of the first four submarines purchased by the Indian Navy in 1969. It played an important role in the 1971 India-Pakistan war. It was decommissioned in 2001 and in 2002 a submarine museum was built at Ramakrishna Beach and INS Kursura was installed in it. It is the first submarine museum in South Asia.

5. Oldest shipyard in India

Established in 1941, Hindustan Shipyard Limited is the oldest shipyard in India.

6. Alluri Sitarama Raju is a native of Visakhapatnam

Freedom fighter Alluri Sitarama Raju, who became known to the whole world through the film RRR, is a native of Visakhapatnam.

7. INS Arihant was built in Visakhapatnam

India's first indigenous nuclear-powered submarine 'INS Arihant' was built in Visakhapatnam. Visakhapatnam is a city with many tourist attractions and many strategic features.
