KANNUR: Thalassery police have filed a case against Kodi Suni, the accused in the TP Chandrasekharan murder case, along with two others, for consuming alcohol publicly while in police custody. Kodi Suni, Muhammad Shafi, and Shinoj have been charged under the Abkari Act.
The incident took place when Kodi Suni was being brought to the Thalassery court in connection with the Mahe double murder case. He was seen drinking in the parking area of a hotel, right in front of the court, in the presence of police officers on escort duty. CCTV footage of the incident also came out.
Police also found that Suni and his group had consumed alcohol near the court premises on earlier occasions as well. The police had sought legal advice before registering the case. It was also decided to assign senior officers for escort duty for the accused.
Following the controversy, the court proceedings for Suni and his group were held via video conference the other day. There were allegations that Suni wore a saffron mundu instead of prison clothes during the hearing. However, legal experts pointed out that there was nothing unusual in this, as he is an undertrial prisoner.
