Kochi drug bust; Police struggle to extract mainour from stomach of accused

KOCHI: Attempts are being made to collect mainour from the stomachs of the accused in the drug bust worth Rs 30 crore. On 16th of this month, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) arrested two Tanzanians who arrived at the Nedumbassery airport. Omari Athumani Jongo (56) and Veronica Adrehem Dunguru (24) tried to smuggle by swallowing cocaine capsules.

Immediately after the arrest, the accused were admitted to Angamaly Adlux Apollo Hospital and an attempt was made to extract the capsules. The capsules in Omari's stomach were removed within a few days. Omari swallowed 1.945 kg of cocaine in more than 100 capsules. However, only 92 capsules could be extracted from Veronica's stomach. The recovered capsules contained 1.800 kilograms of cocaine. A total of 3.745 kilograms of cocaine was collected from the stomach of the accused. Efforts are on to get the rest out.

Omari was produced before the Angamaly Magistrate Court and remanded to Aluva Sub Jail. Both of them reached Nedumbassery by Indigo flight from Ethiopia via Doha. After receiving a tip-off, a detailed scan was conducted and it was found that the accused had drugs in their stomachs. The drug was wrapped in a plastic cover and swallowed in capsule form.
