KOCHI: 85 meteorological stations are being set up across the state to provide relief to Kerala, which has been hit hard by floods twice.
With the commissioning of these within three months, there will be an average of five centers in each district. It is estimated that this will help to record the weather accurately. There is currently no meteorological station in Idukki district where the Mullaperiyar and Idukki dams are located. Also not in Pathanamthitta, Kasargod and Wayanad districts. At present there are fourteen centers in the Kerala region including Lakshadweep. These are in addition to this. The Central Meteorological Department is setting up automatic weather stations worth Rs 5 lakh in the areas taken over by the state.
Automatic weather station installed in the tower at 10 square meters will hand over data to the Central Meteorological Department in Pune within 5 minute intervals. The equipment in the tower records temperature, rainfall, and atmospheric humidity. These will be codified and the observation data from the satellites will be evaluated and reported to the State Government and other Central agencies on a daily basis. The public can get weather information from all over the country from the Indian Meteorological Department website.
