KOCHI: The Hema Commission report has shed light on the disturbing threats faced by actresses in the Malayalam film industry, especially those who voice complaints about the harassment they endure. The report highlights incidents where actors have allegedly threatened actresses by sending explicit photos, warning them against approaching the police or filing complaints.
According to the report, the repercussions for actresses who seek help can be severe, with threats extending to their lives and the safety of their family members. One actress who lodged a complaint became the target of massive cyber attacks. The report also reveals that some actors in the industry resort to sending explicit images to intimidate and weaken these women.
The commission’s findings indicate that actresses in Malayalam cinema are often denied even basic human rights. Many film sets lack proper changing rooms and facilities to meet basic needs, leading to a stark contrast between the conditions provided to actresses and the comforts enjoyed by male stars.
The report also acknowledges the prevalence of the casting couch in the industry, noting that many actresses are afraid to stay alone in hotel rooms, often opting to stay with their parents for safety. Statements from numerous actresses have led to cases being filed under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Protection of Women from Sexual Harassment (PoSH) Act.
