THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Venjaramoodu mass murder accused Afaan, who attempted suicide in the Central Jail, remains in critical condition. Even if survived, Afaan is likely to fall into a coma.

He is currently on a ventilator. When the doctors called his name, Afaan blinked his eyes slightly, which doctors consider a good sign towards recovery. However, this alone is no guarantee of the accused returning to normal life.

The cells have also been destroyed due to insufficient blood flow. This can cause major damage to the brain. MRI scan at regular intervals is needed to ascertain the entire damage suffered to the brain. Due to his body weight, the noose got tight while he hanged which made things worse.

Afaan was kept in a cell in the high-security UT block. When taken out to watch Television as part of the jail routine on Sunday, the youngster requested with the officials to use the washroom. Evading all eyes, Afaan took the laundry kept in the nearby area and went inside the washroom.

Moments later, the jail warden heard noises and barged inside to see Afaan hanging from the ceiling. He was rushed to the hospital at 11 20 am but the youngster was unconscious.
