KOZHIKODE: One more person has died of amoebic meningoencephalitis in the state. The deceased has been identified as Thrissur Chavakkad native Raheem (59), who was undergoing treatment at the Kozhikode Medical College.

Raheem, who was found lying unconscious in Kozhikode, was taken to a private hospital by the locals. He was later shifted to the Kozhikode Medical College. The disease was confirmed following tests conducted in the Critical Care Unit. He passed away this evening. Since Raheem was living alone, the exact source of the infection is unclear.

At present, 10 people are being treated for amoebic meningoencephalitis in Kozhikode. This includes three children at the Institute of Maternal and Child Health, six patients at the Medical College Hospital, and a 30-year-old woman from Ramanattukara at a private hospital. In view of the rapid spread of the infection, the state government has directed authorities to clean water sources across Kerala.
