MALAPPURAM: The first results of the Nilambur by-election have started coming in. When the postal votes were counted, UDF candidate Aryadan Shoukath has gained a lead of 26 votes. Soon after, when the first round of votes began to be counted, Shoukath increased his lead to 39. With more votes counted in the first round, Shoukath lead has improved by more than 500. The results are presently in favour of the UDF in the first phase. The UDF workers have started celebrations in the constituency.

The votes in Vazhikadavu Panchayat, where UDF and P V Anvar have an upper hand, are being counted first. When the first table of the first round was counted, P V Anvar came in second place. Left candidate M Swaraj was in third place. The strong room was opened at 7:30 am and the arrangements were ensured. The counting of votes began at Chungathara Marthoma Higher Secondary School at sharp 8 am.
