THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: All 100 slokas of Sree Narayana Guru's Atmopadesa Śatakam have been rendered as pictures on canvas by Andrew Larkin, a native of Oregon, USA. The visualization of the hundred Shlokas is the result of more than a quarter of a century of dedication.
Andrew was drawn to Guru after attending a 'Soundarya lahari' class conducted by Nitya Chaitanya Yati at the University of Hawaii in the US. He delved into Gurudeva's work through Nitya Chaitanya Yati's 'Atmopadesa Śatakam' study program in 1978-79 at the Portland Narayana Gurukulam.
Andrew holds a Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Washington and got qualified in printmaking at Paris. He studied the history of Indian art at the Deccan College, Pune. Andrew used to teach at the University of Washington and Portland State University and was the Academic Director of the Portland 'Art Institute'. He has been drawing in American periodicals. Andrew has received the Ford Foundation Award, Sarah Denny Fellowship, and Ursula Hemingway Award.
Exhibition at Varkala Gurukulam this month
Pictures are being exhibited at the Gurukulam this month as part of the Varkala Narayana Gurukulam centenary celebrations and the beginning of Nitya Chaitanya Yati's birth centenary celebrations. The exhibition will be held at the Narayana Gurukulam Convention starting on December 23.
The first exhibition was held at 'Island Gurukula Aranya', a Gurukulam established in Bainbridge, USA by Nitya Chaitanya Yati's disciple Nancy Yielding. The second exhibition was held in London.
