THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Cabinet meeting has approved a special project of Rs 93 crores to renovate, Kovalam, one of south India's most important beaches, and its associated beaches and to ensure coastal protection. The aim is to attract more tourists. The renovation work will be done in two phases. Kovalam is famous for its beaches which are widely recognized by domestic and foreign tourists. With three crescent-shaped beaches, it is also popular for its shallow waters and tidal waves.
WAPCOS was also assigned as a special purpose vehicle to implement the project prepared and submitted by KIIFB. Minister PA Mohammad Riyas said in a Facebook post that a comprehensive development plan should be implemented to restore Kovalam's lost glory due to the Covid crisis and sea attack.
"As soon as I took charge of the tourism department, I visited the Kovalam beach and carried out repair works there. A meeting was held on July 26, 2021 to review the future development activities of Kovalam Beach.The Chief Minister also called meetings and gave instructions regarding Kovalam tourism development.", the minister said.
