KOZHIKODE: Police have launched an extensive search for a thief who pushed a 64-year-old woman off a moving train and stole her bag. The victim, Ammini, was returning from a post-funeral ceremony at her brother’s house in Mumbai when the incident occurred. She fell to the ground and sustained a head injury. The bag stolen from her reportedly contained Rs 8,500.
Ammini was seated near the door in the S-1 coach with her brother, Varghese. When the train stopped at Kozhikode, Varghese went to the bathroom. As the train started moving again, the thief attempted to grab the bag placed on the seat. Ammini tried to hold onto it, but the thief forcefully snatched the bag and pushed her out of the train before fleeing. Although other passengers were present, most were asleep and did not witness the incident.
Alerted by the noise, Varghese came out of the bathroom and, with the help of the TTE, pulled the emergency chain to halt the train. Along with other passengers, he rushed back along the tracks and found Ammini injured and bleeding. They brought her back to the train, which then resumed its journey. Ammini later disembarked at Tirur station and was taken to Kozhikode Medical College Hospital. Relatives then transported her to Thrissur for further care.
Ammini narrowly escaped a serious tragedy, as another train passed on a nearby track immediately after she fell. Fortunately, there were no hazardous objects at the spot, which helped prevent more severe injuries.
