THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Egg rates in India are now at their highest level in five years. The current price of one egg is Rs 8. This has caused major difficulties for those in the hotel and street-food sectors, as they are unable to increase the prices of dishes in proportion to the rise in egg prices.
At present, street-food vendors charge about Rs 15 for a single omelette. If egg prices continue to rise, these rates may go up again. The highest egg production in India comes from Namakkal in Tamil Nadu. Eggs from farms there cost around Rs 6.05 each, and by the time they reach markets in Kerala, the price becomes Rs 7.30. A rise in domestic demand and a slight drop in production are the main reasons for the current price hike.
In Kerala, meat and egg prices normally decrease during the Mandala season in November and December. But with Christmas preparations starting soon, cake production will increase, which is expected to push egg prices even higher. Despite the rising cost, demand for eggs rarely falls.
