THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: IMD has confirmed heatwave in Palakkad district for the first time in the state. Palakkad has been recording five degrees above normal temperature for the past five days. A heat wave warning was announced in 2016 but was not confirmed.
A heatwave warning has been issued in Kollam and Thrissur districts till 28th. This is based on consecutive days of extremely hot weather and the forecast of temperatures reaching 40 degrees Celsius in the coming days. Sunstroke and sunburns are more likely to occur during a heat wave. Severe sunstroke can even lead to death. It is also advised not to expose the body to direct sunlight from 11 am to 3 pm.
High temperature for four days
Palakkad: 41 degrees
Kollam: 40 degrees
Thrissur: 39 degrees
Pathanamthitta, Kozhikode and Kannur districts: 38 degrees
Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Malappuram and Kasaragod districts: 37 degrees
Thiruvananthapuram: 36 degrees
Wayanad, Idukki, Kottayam: 33 degrees
Burned heat on polling day too
Temperatures were two to four degrees above normal today, which is the polling day. Palakkad district recorded the highest temperature - 41.4 degrees. Punalur is in second place with 38.5. Thrissur recorded 38 degrees
High waves
The National Center for Oceanography and Research has advised coastal residents to be alert as there is a phenomenon called Kallakadal aka swell surge waves in the Indian Ocean following strong winds.
Light rain
Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Idukki and Thrissur districts will receive light rain till the 30th.
