KOLLAM: The Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) has finally taken action in the case of Midhun, an eighth-class student of Thevalakkara Boys' School, who died of electrocution. The board has suspended Biju S, the overseer of the Thevalakkara electrical section. Midhun, who climbed onto the tin shed adjacent to the classroom to take his friend's shoes, died after he came in touch with a low-lying power line. The authorities did not do anything even though the power line had been in a dangerous condition for a long time.
The shed that was temporarily built eight years ago also did not have permission. The headmistress of the school was suspended immediately after Midhun's death. Education Minister V Sivankutty had also informed that the management of Thevalakkara Boys' School had been dismissed. The education department has taken over the administration of the school.
The cabinet meet that convened yesterday decided to provide financial assistance to Midhun's parents. A decision was taken to allocate Rs 10 lakh to the boy's family from the Chief Minister's Relief Fund. KSEB had earlier given Rs 5 lakh. Sivankutty had announced emergency assistance of Rs 3 lakh from the account of the general education department. The Thevalakkara School Management had also handed over Rs 10 lakh to the family. The Scouts and Guides will construct a house for his family.
