THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: With the usage of induction stoves becoming common in households due to gas shortage, the electricity consumption in the state is soaring at an alarming rate. If more electricity has to be purchased from outside at a higher price, it will be reflected in the electricity bill.

The all-time peak hour record of 5797 MW and the daily consumption record of 115 million units were set in May 2024. However, 5621 MW was consumed on Tuesday. The fact that this much was consumed in the month of March itself is foreboding.

KSEB estimates that even if the peak demand reaches 6000 MW, it can proceed without a crisis. However, if the heat increases and the demand for electricity surges, the situation will likely worsen.

A situation similar to the severe summer of 2024 is on the cards. Due to excessive consumption, there were reports of transformers burning, and the distribution network facing issues. KSEB estimates that even if electricity consumption increases this time, such problems will not arise, as new transformers have been installed and the distribution network has been strengthened.

Although the water level in the dams did not decrease significantly, production may soon be adjusted in view of the hot summer ahead.

About 30 per cent of the electricity required in the state is generated domestically. The rest of the electricity is purchased from other states through various contracts. Although electricity is available as per the contracts, the cost of electricity during peak hours is higher. The additional cost is passed on to consumers as a fuel surcharge.

  • To avoid excessive consumption during peak hours, electric cooking should be avoided after 6 pm.
  • Induction stoves and microwave ovens can be used during the day. Cook during the day to meet the needs of the night.
  • Setting the AC temperature to 26 can save a lot of electricity.
